چکیده

We identify the chemical elements and element ratios that should be analyzed to address many of the issues defined by COMPLEX. We determined that most of these issues require two chemically sensitive instruments to analyze the necessary complement of elements. In addition, it is useful in many cases to use one instrument to analyze the outermost planetary surface (e.g., to determine weathering effects), while a second is used to analyze a subsurface volume of material (e.g., to determine the composition of unaltered planetary surface material). This dual approach to chemical analyses will also facilitate the calibration of orbital and/or Earth-based spectral observations of the planetary body. We determined that in many cases the scientific issues defined by COMPLEX can only be fully addressed with combined packages of instruments that would supplement the chemical data with mineralogic or visual information.

Introduction to special section: The Hemispheric Dichotomy of Mars

[i] The hemispheric dichotomy is one the most fundamental and least understood features of Mars. The papers in this special section address aspects of the origin of the crustal dichotomy and the modification and evolution of the dichotomy boundary and the northern lowlands. These studies utilize new data from a variety of instruments on spacecraft operating in Mars orbit and on the surface. Thi...

Embedded Control of a Miniature Science Rover for Planetary Exploration

Recent advances in micro-technology and mobile robotics have enabled the development of extremely small, automated vehicles for new application frontiers. One of these possible applications is the use of miniature robotic vehicles equipped with on-board science instruments for planetary surface exploration. One such vehicle is being developed as part of a technology research task at the Jet Pro...

Percussive Dynamic Cone Penetrometer for Geotechnical Surface Assessment with a Planetary

Introduction: During the past planetary surface missions, few instruments have been deployed to directly assess soil physical properties like density, soil strength (internal friction and cohesion), and pressure/sinkage curves, or their spatial variation. Several Soviet lunar missions were equipped with small cone vane penetrometers, and the Apollo astronauts also used two different manual pene...

Planetary Probe Entry and Descent Instrumentation - a Review

Planetary entry probes may carry a variety of ‘simple’ instrumentation to characterize the profiles of basic atmospheric physical properties and composition, in addition to sophisticated chemical analyses and imagers. I survey these ‘simple’ sensors, noting technological improvements in conventional atmospheric structure instruments as well as a number of less well-known instruments such as sho...
